Shortly after Charlie Kirk was assassinated, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution honoring him. But while it passed in a bipartisan manner, not everyone was on board. In fact, there were 58 democrats who voted against the resolution, and a significant number of others who either voted “present” or simply didn’t vote.
One of these who voted against it was Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC), D-N.Y., who not only voted against it, but stood up on the House floor and said:,
"We should be clear about who Charlie Kirk was: A man who believed that the Civil Rights Act that granted Black Americans the right to vote was a 'mistake,' who after the violent attack on Paul Pelosi claimed that ‘some amazing patriot' should bail out his brutal assailant, and accused Jews of controlling ‘not just the colleges — it's the nonprofits, it's the movies, it's Hollywood, it's all of it.'" ... "His rhetoric and beliefs were ignorant, uneducated, and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans – far from 'working tirelessly to promote unity' as asserted by the majority in this resolution.”
(You can read about it at https://www.newsmax.com/us/aoc-charlie-kirk-resolution/2025/09/19/id/1227128/)
So, according to AOC, Kirk’s “rhetoric and beliefs were ignorant, uneducated, and sought to disenfranchise millions of Americans.”
But I especially want to zero in on the criticism about his beliefs. Charlie Kirk was an outspoken Christian, and all of his beliefs were informed by his Christian faith. So AOC is standing in judgment of his beliefs based on her beliefs. And that is okay if she can justify her beliefs.
But she can’t! She was raised Roman Catholic, and even now sometimes makes reference to her Catholic faith. However, it is not her Catholic faith that is the foundation of her life.
She openly identifies as a Democratic Socialist, and is, in fact, one of the most prominent members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). But here’s the deal. Socialism is not a Christian concept, but is a direct expression of atheistic Naturalism. And that is the foundation she stands on to critique Charlie Kirk.
AOC and people like her who try to vindicate their social agenda using Christianity to justify their positions, are either deliberately using the Christian faith as a cover, or simply have no idea what they are talking about.
AOC’s complaints about Kirk have to do with him not supporting atheistic Marxism’s socialist agenda that she equates with biblical values. While helping people socially is considered a positive value by Christianity, it is not Christianity’s ultimate goal. For Marxist Socialism, the social policy positions are the ultimate goal. The goal of the Christian faith, on the other hand, is to bring people into a personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ. In Christianity, policy positions are an expression of a life conformed to the image of Christ. These two are not the same. It is quite possible to support good social values in a way that is ungodly.
AOC actually has no interest in accomplishing the work of God through her life. Her bottom line is to impose socialist policies on society. It is her socialist beliefs that inform her supposed Christian faith. In Christianity it is exactly the opposite – the faith informs one’s social conscience.
Sadly, most Christians don’t know how to make that distinction because they don’t have a solid understanding of the Christian faith. When that happens, it is easy to fall into the trap that AOC has fallen into and end up inserting non-biblical beliefs into their worldview foundation.
