What The Bundy Family’s Hard Stand, Vol. I: A Family of Courage is about

I was in awe of a man who would stand against the most powerful government in the world, an army of armed federal agents who could crush him within minutes. I wanted to know why Cliven Bundy was willing to risk prison, but more importantly —his life —for a bunch of cows. After months of research and talking to Bundy family members and protesters, I found that it was not about cows but about individual freedoms and protecting them. It’s also about prayer, fasting, listening to that “Still, small voice” of the Holy Spirit, and then following through after receiving an answer. It’s also about faith, acting on that faith, and being obedient to a higher power.

When Cliven Bundy tried every legal means to prove that he had the right to graze and water his cattle according to the laws of the state of Nevada and under the United States Constitution, and failed, he had to make a choice: Lose those rights and his ability to ranch and make a living, or make a hard stand. He chose to make a hard stand. It took courage to do so, and his family stood by him. Hundreds of people from across America also joined Cliven in the April 2014 “standdown/protest” to help defend the rights his family earned through beneficial use beginning in 1877. Everyone who came said the same thing, “I had to come. I was drawn like a magnet. It was a spiritual thing.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

R Gene Miller loves the United States of America and what it stands for. Writing this book is his way of expressing that. It’s his contribution to the never-ending fight to preserve the freedoms we have enjoyed. It’s his way of waking up the American people who have slumbered as our Constitution slowly fades into obscurity. 

R Gene is the author of numerous newspaper and magazine articles and editorials on human-interest and current-events topics. He has also authored a multiple award-winning Southern fiction book (which is truth disguised as fiction) and a book of campfire stories for young adults. 

He worked in the paper industry for forty-four years before retiring in 2017. Prior to that, he bagged groceries, cleaned bricks, worked in tobacco fields as a cropper (picker), worked briefly in a circus, managed a supermarket, handled inventory control for a convenience store chain, and worked as a dental technician. Writing, however, is his second (but favorite) career. He attended school at what is now Florida State College. 

Although a native of Tennessee, he has been a proud Floridian for seventy years, having made his home in North Florida’s Lake City in the Suwannee Valley and in Yulee on Florida’s First Coast—the Atlantic seaboard. R Gene is married to Linda Miller, and together they enjoy a Brady Bunch family of nine children, twenty grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
