Government Eviction of God from the Public Forum

Government Eviction of God from the Public Forum

Abraham Kuyper proposed three God-ordained realms, or “spheres,” of sovereignty: State (government), Society (community, business, family, etc.) and Church. The only one of these spheres that has been given the responsibility of the sword (punishment, even unto death) is the State, our civil government. And yet, in order to bring balance to this enormous power, this is the one sphere where God has interjected Himself. That is, in this ordained sphere, God insists on being involved. God doesn’t necessarily interject himself into other spheres. You could have a marriage without God in it. You could have a community without God in it. You could even have a church and not have God in it. But you cannot have a government without God in it.

Government Eviction of God from the Public ForumThink about it: If the government was allowed to wield the word of punishment and execution unchecked by God Himself, imagine the carnage and mayhem.  Take Stalin, for instance.  He declared that God didn’t exist as he murdered anywhere from 20 to 40 million people, but God eventually intervened.  History tells us many, many more similar stories of corrupt governments falling to their knees as they tried to push God aside.  I see three basic steps that lead up to such a circumstance.

The first step is that God becomes a nuisance.  When God insists on involvement, God himself becomes an annoyance to a government—dictatorship, democracy or anything in between—that refuses to submit to God’s sovereignty.  Thus, in the eyes of the government, God becomes the problem and government as an institution begins to push God out of decision-making processes.  Take, for example, some of the trends we’ve seen recently.  Historical revisionists insist that there was no Christian basis in the forming of our country.  The courts have disconnected the Biblical basis of law, which ultimately equates to judicial activism.  We’ve also seen a rapid decline in education, and the morals of our children have moved more and more toward “me-centeredness.”

The second step, falling in succession after the first step of pushing God out of the government, is that the government now attempts to become God.  The government becomes the answer to the perceived problems and, of course, the government becomes the savoir.  This is the natural next step of attempting to work God out of the government.

The final step, and what we often miss, is that because God controls all things and has all resources, He will not be evicted, and He will push himself back into the governmental process.  We’ve seen this time and again in history.  Ultimately, if you read the end of the Book, the ultimate expression of this is that Jesus Himself comes back and sets up his own government.

It’s not hard to find where America’s government, and governments worldwide, fit in this timeline.  We shouldn’t be surprised about the economic downturn and the moral decline of developed civilizations across the globe.  It’s only the result of 50 years of work in an attempt to move God out of the public sector.  But be encouraged, my Christian brothers and sisters, the Lord will inject himself back into the process.  I would not be presumptuous to say that the End Times are near, but no one knows the day or the hour.

So, what’s the response for the Christian?  Between now and the time the Lord sets up his perfect government here on earth, we must busily be about the work of the Kingdom.  Share the Good News, build and strengthen ministries, overcome evil with good, reach out to those who are hurting in hurting times, put down fear and lift up hope.  And always remember that we serve the all-powerful, sovereign, just and true God of the universe.  He will not be evicted.
