It seems that the use of vulgar language is becoming the norm for many people these days. While it generally gets bleeped out on radio and TV, and in the printed media they will print the first letter of the vulgar word followed by blank underlines, it is generally quite clear what was intended.
This is becoming so common, Fox news did an entire article about it (https://www.foxnews.com/politics/what-bleep.print). But this kind of behavior is popping up almost every day now. Here are some recent headlines:
... and there are so many more.
President Trump is particularly getting blasted with vulgarity recently.
... all said āf___ Trumpā in front of the media and large crowds.
But itās not just in the political arena. This kind of vulgarity can be heard anywhere and in all kinds of circumstances. It is sometimes heard when people want to express their anger, but for many it is such a regular part of their speech that it just comes out all the time in normal conversation.
Beyond that, some people are so proud of their ability to be vulgar, that they even put down and insult people who object to the vulgarity ā or even who simply donāt speak that way themselves. What is this world coming to?
So how is a Christian to respond to that? Christians donāt need to be haughty or self-righteous in their reactions, but at the same time, they also donāt need to accept it as normal. After all, God has revealed in Scripture that dirty language does not correspond to His will. Letās just look at a sampling of what the Bible says.
The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.Ā Proverbs 13:3
Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Ephesians 4:29
And there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.Ā Ephesians 5:4
But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.Ā Colossians 3:8
But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness.Ā 2 Timothy 2:16
If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not [a]bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this manās religion is worthless.Ā James 1:26
But even beyond the verses quoted above, Jesus, Himself, taught this principle. In Luke 6:45, He said,Ā āThe good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.ā
The reason Christians are admonished not to use filthy language has nothing to do with being prudish. We have to remember who God is and why He created man in the first place.
God is holy. There is no sin in Him. Beyond that, He will not even fellowship with sin. When He created mankind, He did it for the purpose of relationship. When people use foul language, what it is demonstrating is that there is unholiness in the personās heart that is being expressed through their language. It is not the language that separates a person from God, but the unholiness in their heart. God has revealed that we must rid ourselves of that. Those who refuse to do so only demonstrate that they do not hold a biblical worldview, and that they are not interested in fellowshipping with God.
Some brush this off and consider using vulgar language no big deal, and that the language they use has no effect on their relationship with God. What they donāt seem to realize is that when they do that, they are basically telling God that His will doesnāt matter. They are putting their own values above the values God has revealed to correspond to His will.
The modern proclivity to use dirty language is not benign. Using that language will not send a person to Hell, but the attitude of the heart that produces it will. It is really not a very smart thing to deliberately spit in Godās face by using language that He has revealed to be contrary to His will.
