OnlyFans sounds like it ought to be some kind of sports website. Well, if that’s what you think, you are in for a big surprise. What we actually have here is a subscription platform for people over 18 years of age who wish to view risque content. On it, private individuals can become content creators and put themselves out there for other people to view – for a price.
The most recent stats, as of this writing, indicate that, worldwide, there are over three million content creators. And as for subscribers, we are looking at about 230 million. And lest you think this is just some small porn site, OnlyFans paid its creators $5.5 billion just last year. That’s a lot of dough, with many of the creators receiving in the multi-millions of dollars. And while it is populated mostly by straight white women, 25% are actually men, and a substantial number are also homosexual. Additionally, while the majority of people on the site are just regular ordinary citizens, there is also a significant celebrity presence, as well.
While a lot of people are making a lot of money on the platform, for some, getting on OnlyFans is not without its drawbacks. Of course most of the people who do it obviously don’t care about what others think (other than wanting to be considered attractive enough for others to be willing to shell out money to be voyeurs). At the same time, it has been harmful to some. For example, a couple of teachers at a high school in Missouri were placed on leave after their bosses found out they had OnlyFans accounts. Another teacher, this one in Arizona, resigned under pressure after some students came across her account and parents expressed their disapproval. Then, there is the case of a special needs teaching assistant in Canada who was fired for refusing to take down her account. There are many other examples, of course.
It is rather obvious that the values represented by the very existence of this platform is anything but Christian. Biblical values have a much higher regard for human dignity than what is exemplified here. People who follow biblical values would never parade themselves scantily clad (or unclad) for people to ogle over. Those who truly love God would not objectify others by paying for and watching them participate in lewd behavior, nor would they degrade themselves by doing it. Biblical values portray human beings as persons created in the image of God who are worthy of a level of respect that precludes that kind of behavior.
Sadly, biblical values are not the value set that currently dominates modern society. That would be naturalistic worldview beliefs. Naturalism is the belief that the natural universe, operating by natural laws, is all that exists. If that is true, then there is no God who is able to reveal values that can be considered true or right. If there is no God, then people have to make up their morality.
And that is exactly what has happened with OnlyFans. The creator of the site feels no moral constraints about what he is willing to do to make more money. The content creators don’t see anything wrong with flaunting their bodies to make a buck. And those paying to be voyeurs don’t view other human beings as persons created in the image of God, and don’t see anything wrong with objectifying them to satisfy their own lusts.
We, as fallen human beings, have a terrible weakness. We want to have a lot of money. We want to have recognition from others (even if it comes via sinful behavior). And we want to have our lusts satisfied. As a result, we often end up doing things that go against God’s desires and displease Him. And it is made all the more difficult because society approves of (and even encourages) it.
There is a way, though, to move beyond that weakness. God has not left us to fend for ourselves. For those who don’t want to have their sin nature dominate them, God has offered to enter our lives and lend us His strength to overcome the pull of our sin nature. He gives us the strength to make decisions not to be dominated by it.
Wow! That is powerful. Those willing to take that step can become FansOnly of God.
